I agree it's way too early to predict -- at least, with certainty -- Democrats losing seats over this bill. But it'd be foolish to pretend that the bill hasn't made an already- challenging political environment more challenging, especially for a lot of Democrats from swing districts. It's true that the incumbent president's party often loses seats in the midterms, but it's also true that these losses aren't usually giant electoral bloodlettings. When Charlie Cook is drawing comparisons to 1994, it's time to watch out.

And, sure, public opinion can certainly turn, and there's still seven months between now and the elections. But I wouldn't be so sanguine about Democrats being able to "sell" the public on the bill after the fact since (a) they've been trying to do so for more than a year now and the thing's still underwater; (b) the pain starts pretty much immediately while most of the benefits are years away; and (c) the economy still sucks.

As for independents abandoning the GOP in droves if it embraces the Tea Party: it's equally likely that independents will abandon the Democrats in droves if they continue making vile sexual slurs and scurrilous and unsubstantiated accusations of racism against Tea Partiers. Just last month a CNN poll found that the public was split on the Tea Party by a margin of 35% support, 20% oppose, 45% don't know. A December LA Times poll found that 41% of likely voters approved of the Tea Party -- which was more than approved of either the Democratic Party or the GOP. That hardly sounds like electoral toxicity.

I read the Gallup poll from yesterday that you're talking about. It contrasts pretty baldly with the tracking polls taken before the weekend, and with a Bloomberg poll released this morning. I know of no other polls showing that ObamaCare has surged in popularity since the weekend, though I certainly won't be surprised to see it get a bump given that all the cable news networks spent the day blathering about the historic nature of the bill's passage.

You must be tired. How can you rail against Groupthink while perpetrating it incessantly in your Blog?

I do not have enough hours in my night to dispute all of your supposed facts, but here are two comments that you are way premature on.

1. Way to early to say that Democrats are going to lose seats over this bill. The ruling party in mid-term elections almost always lose seats, and the predictions of a take over of the house or senate are laughable. Public opinion has plenty of time to turn and if the Conservative movement is going to latch onto the hatred and Bigotry (Yes, I will say it) of the Tea Party folks, Independents are going to abandon the Republican party in droves.

2. Speaking of plenty of time for public opinion to turn, it only took two days. Three polls today show trends in the popularity of the bill. The latest Gallup/USA Today poll has it 49% a positive step that the bill passed and 40% Negative. That is only one of three polls showing huge swings from last week.

Sounds like you spent to much time in the Conservative Group think tank the last 24 hours Cuz.
